SSWSC Welcomes National and World Athletes to Important Qualifier

Steamboat Springs, December 5th: The Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) welcomes athletes from around the world on Saturday, December 5, to celebrate the official ‘start of winter’ at Howelsen Hill and compete in an important qualifying event for the historic sports of Nordic Combined/Ski Jumping. Beginning at 9am, the Nordic Combined/Special Jumping event, “Winter Start,” will mark the first home event of the season for the SSWSC. Along with young athletes from four divisions around the country, the high-flying members of the US Ski Team, US Special Jumping Team, and Korean National Ski Team will exhibit their skills down the historic Nordic Jumps at Howelsen Hill.

Winter Start marks an important event for Nordic Combined and Special Jumping athletes; it not only marks the start of the competitive winter season both locally and nationally, but also is a US Cup opener, qualifier (the first of two) for the World Jr. Team, qualifier for the Youth Olympics (the first of two), and a Continental Cup Team tryout.

Athletes from age groups U16, U18, U20, and Senior will compete, with the first jump on the HS75 starting at 9:00am. For those looking for a show, athletes will take to the skies on Howelsen’s largest jump, the HS100, following the completion of the HS75 competition at 11:00am.

Also unique to Winter Start, cross country 5km and 10km races will be held under the lights in rare evening events starting at 5:00pm.
